Rail + 2 TicketsPage last modified/checked: Thursday, January 08, 2004Rail+2 tickets were introduced on the 23rd May 1982 in response to public critisism over Rail+4 tickets being the cheapest ticket then available for a short journey under the original Zone 1-2-3 fare system. It is known that in the prelude to the Neighbourhood fare system (November 1983), the Rail+2 was to be abolished. However, the Government, perhaps fearful of being condemned a second time over price structuring, retained the Rail+2, and took the initiative of introducing a concession equivalent. They are only issued from, and available between, stations in Zone 1. They are further unique being the only Metcard tickets that print the name of the station where they were validated. This process is limited to the 10 left-most characters. |

A previously unknown validation "PARLIAMENT2" - was discovered during March 2001. "PARLIAMENT" was the only known validation up to this time.
Rail+2 tickets were withdrawn effective with the fare rise from 1st January 2004 bringing an absolute end to any form of station name appearing on Melbourne rail tickets. A grace period exists to allow for the use of pre-purchased Rail+2 tickets until the 31st March 2004. A new ticket known as "City Saver" was introduced with the fare rise and is a partial substitute for Rail+2.
