Metcard - Withdrawal and Re-instatement
of certain fares
Page last modified/checked: Thursday, January 08, 2004
It is beyond the scope of this website to delve into the politics of the transport system, however, one particular event needs to be acknowledged as it had a direct bearing on the Metcard ticket range. Concurrent with the annual fare rise on Sunday January 1st 2001, the Off-Peak Saver, Group Get-A-Bout and Family daily tickets (along with some other non-Metcard types) were withdrawn from the metropolitan fare system. Within days, the State Government had stepped in, somewhat alarmed at the unannounced and underhanded (at least in the public's eye) way in which these tickets had been wiped. Basically this instance revealed the indifference between the passenger charters and the franchises drawn up for the private transport operators by the previous State Government. The tickets had been reinstated by Thursday the 5th of January at a price approximately 10% higher than before; but from all this came word that a "revamp" of the ticket system was planned for sometime in 2001 - surely something that will help expand this website further!
