Seniors Sunday Pass

Page last modified/checked: Sunday, 28th November, 2010
The Seniors Sunday Pass was introduced from Sunday 27th August 2006. It is "valid for free travel on trains, trams and buses entirely within Zones 1+2+3 of the Melbourne metropolitan area (not including bus services to Portsea, Healesville and Warburton), and free travel entirely within the bus networks of major regional cities such as Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo" on Sundays only. It is valid for one year from the date of first validation - probably the only Sundays-only yearly ticket in the world! An application form is required to be filled out and submitted prior to issue.
The pass is available from premium stations, the Met shop, or staffed V/Line stations.

An announcement dated 16th July 2007 (since removed) appeared on the metlink site in regard to Important information for Seniors Sunday Pass holders. Basically, the main points are:
  • Since July 2006, more than 350,000 Victorian Seniors Card holders have received a Seniors Sunday Pass. Most of these passes were due to expire between August and November this year (2007).
  • Changes to the Metcard ticketing system have been made so that Seniors Sunday Passes will remain valid for use beyond the printed expiry date. This means current pass holders do not have to apply for a new Seniors Sunday Pass.
  • Current Seniors Sunday Passes will continue to allow Victorian Seniors free Sunday travel on public transport within metropolitan Zones 1+2, as well as selected regional cities.
  • Victorian Seniors who plan to travel with their Seniors Sunday Pass in the future should disregard any expiry messages shown on the ticket validating machines or station barrier gates.

This unusually coloured example has been found, but nothing is known of the reason why it is printed with a different background colour.
Lower and higher numbered tickets have been seen, but all have the gold background.
