MMTB - Monthly Travel Permit

Page last modified/checked: Friday, 4 October 2002
The example we have shown here pre-dates the three zone fare system we are reviewing, however, it must be included to give completeness to the MMTB's tickets during that time. It is also the only example we have seen.

10c brown ticket

During the period of the zonal system, the permit sold for $30.00. However, the holder paid an additional 10c fare whenever it was presented. Tram conductors and bus drivers carried a block of brown 10c tickets specifically for this reason. It is presumed the colour of the permit changed with each calendar month. The combined costs of the permit plus the 10c fare meant it was viable only to those making longer or multiple journies. When the zonal fare structure commenced, passengers could make an informed decision, with the aid of the comprehensive brochure, whether they would purchase the permit or the new zonal/multimodal daily Travelcard. The later addition of the weekly Travelcard would have further affected potential sales; indeed, this ticket was a good example of where cost comparison paid off.
