The Australian Open Tennis tournament was held at Melbourne Park (located near Richmond station) between the 17th and 30th of January 2000. In conjunction with this event, Hillside Trains launched a special promotion, known as the "Tennis Train-In", to encourage patrons to use rail to get to the venue. Tickets were available from Zone 1 ($4.00), Zones 1&2 ($6.50) and Zones 1/2/3 ($8.50) to Richmond, Jolimont or Flinders Street stations. (This was the actual way the zones were portrayed on the tickets). The tickets were valid for forward travel after 9.00am on each of the days and validated by the issuing clerk nipping out the appropriate date. As these tickets were already being offered at a discount, and $1.00 from each sale was being donated to the Kids Tennis Foundation, no concession issues were available. As well, the rear portion of the ticket became an entry form for a raffle; the prize being ..... a new car !!
