An Automated Fare Collection System from Thorn-EMI was introduced for ferry services provided by State Transit from the 10th July 1989,
replacing a system of tokens and turnstiles and ultimatic issues for Hydrofoil travel. Ticket vending machines, booking office
machines and ticket barriers were installed at Circular Quay and Manly wharves.
