MMTB Bus - Transfer Ticket

Page last modified/checked: Friday, 4 October 2002
The only reference to this (unique?) paper issue that we can find is reproduced here from an MMTB bus timetable dated June 1980. It includes some of the routes listed on the transfer. While the timetable is over a year prior to the zonal fare system, it is reasonable to assume that this arrangement continued longer because section based tickets were unaffected by the zones. The transfer allowed the holder to change between eastern suburbs local services and city bus/tram services without the inconvenience of paying a second time. A Travelcard, while permitting the same thing, was much more expensive than any of the possibilities shown in the table.

Tram conductors on Route 48 also carried the transfer as it acted as a feeder with buses on Elgar Road which did not have a direct City service. It is recalled that the transfer was widely used as discarded examples could often be found on the MMTB's vehicles. Were there similar arrangements with Western suburbs bus routes or at the Clifton Hill interchange?
