Rail Family

Page last modified/checked: Friday, 4 October 2002
The Victorian Railways had always provided tickets to cater for suburban family travel. During the currency of this system, it would be the only time they were of the Edmondson type. Prior to this, family tickets were large, thin cards which, by the end of the 1970's had been replaced by Family Excursion blank cards. A staff circular dated June 20th 1982 advised that printed zonal based family tickets were "now being distributed and could be issued immediately". The full range is shown here - these were an interesting, if unexpected inclusion into the rail ticket range.

These were available for one return journey for a maximum of two adults and four children though there was no perforation to remove a forward stub.

The utility blank cards referred to continued to be held and could be used for two further family fares: Central zone at $4.00, and later, Rail+Two at $1.40. As there would have been limited demand for these, printed Edmondsons were not warranted.
