Country issue zone tickets

Page last modified/checked: Friday, 4 October 2002
Many country stations had held tickets available for suburban travel at some point. These were mostly printed destination or blank issues worded "Melbourne to ...". With the simplified zonal fares, it was practicable to hold certain ticket types to cover travel to a much wider range of metropolitan destinations. It is not clear whether stations could order in what they felt was necessary, or automatically received stocks of most zone tickets. Many used examples were found but a great many more came to light after their withdrawal (but still not helping to answer this question). A selection of these tickets are shown below.

Note the variations in identifying the station of issue and the inclusion of the word "Melbourne" on some tickets. This was actually necessary on all but the Travelcards to provide a point of origin in the suburban area, otherwise it would be possible for the holder to make multiple or longer journies than permitted.

Later printings show "Melbourne" as the originating station.
