YARRA TRAMS CBD PARK 'N' RIDE

Page last modified/checked: Sunday, May 06, 2007
Sometime between October and December 2000 Yarra Trams added to the growing number of related AFC enabled magnetic stripe tickets when they introduced the attractive design shown here in conjunction with their new city Park N Ride scheme.

In summary, three car parks on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD are participating in the Park 'n' Ride scheme whereby a motorist can park their car securely between 7.00am and 7.00pm weekdays, and obtain this new tram only ticket in a combined package for $8.50. The car parks are located at the Colonial Stadium, the Melbourne Museum and at Olympic Park, (the latter pulled out after about two years possibly because of construction work on the Citylink road tunnels...?) These three localities put car parking patrons on or very near to frequent tram services operated by Yarra Trams. Note, however, that this ticket is available on BOTH Yarra Trams and Swanston Trams services so as to to give complete access to the CBD tram system. The customer is required to validate their ticket on initial boarding and any subsequent transfers betweeen the two tram operators.

The design features the spire on the Melbourne Arts Centre and an articulated B class tram. It is not known whether the design shown here was ever altered to show Yarra Trams as the sole operator after National Express withdrew from the Melbourne transport scene in December 2004.

The cost of the Park N Ride package increased by $1.00 in 2004 and 2005 respectively. With the January 2006 fare rise the cost rose to a hefty $13.50. Stepping forward to March 2007, when we went to investigate the current status with the tram ticket design it was found that the Park N Ride scheme had ended abruptly earlier that month. Shown here is the 2006 brochure for the Park N Ride scheme.
