At some stations, the new zone based weeklies replaced the greatest number of any ticket type held. By this time, weekly tickets had become the last vestige of the former station to station based fare method. The busier the station, the greater the range of destinations held as weekly tickets. (Some pre 1966 stock survived to the end!). While the station of issue was identified on the new weekly tickets, it was now possible to roam anywhere on the rail network within the zone/s indicated.

The practice of applying a weekly numeral to rail weeklies ceased with the introduction of Travelcard weeklies in February 1982. Instead, the rail weeklies now matched their counterparts with the expiry date stamped with a specifically provided, large hand dater. The date of issue was, however, still applied by the Edmondson dating press.

Gone was the myriad of weekly combinations once held, including the card utility blanks
