Rail+FOUR

This group consisted of adult and concession issues for single, return and off peak travel. There was also an adult weekly issue. Basically, the Rail+FOUR was the eqivalent of the former single charging zone (1 section) at 35c, but in some cases it matched a 60c, 2 section fare. It is difficult to draw an exact comparison between the two, because the former charging zones were unequal in length and devised from Melbourne outwards. Rail+FOUR, on the other hand, was based on a fixed number of stations.

The original staff instructions advised that Rail+FOUR was not to be issued to or from stations Ardeer, Deer Park, Rockbank, Melton, Sydenham, Diggers Rest, Sunbury and Craigieburn. These stations were beyond the electrified network and served by much less frequent country trains. Even so, they had long been included in the metropolitan fare structure. At odds with this instruction are the many used and withdrawn Rail+FOUR tickets issued from the stations concerned. (...?)
